Muslim couple served bacon in McDonald’s Egg and Cheese McMuffin
McDonald’s has issued an apology to a Muslim couple after erroneously adding bacon to their Egg and Cheese McMuffin order.
The fast-food giant initiated a comprehensive probe into the incident that took place at the Trent Vale, Springfield Retail Park branch.
The couple, who had just spent a night at the Royal Stoke University Hospital, visited the outlet at 9.40am on Wednesday, July 2, placing an order for two Egg and Cheese McMuffins, two hash browns and two apple juices, with the bill amounting to £9.98.
To their dismay, upon biting into the McMuffin, one of them realised it included bacon.

Expressing their distress, one half of the couple remarked: “I won’t go back to McDonald’s anytime soon.
“For literally over 30 years of my life, I’ve never thought about eating pork, never had it, always avoided it. We’ve never consumed it. Our kids will probably never consume it.”
Further voicing their disappointment, his spouse recounted: “We are both practising Muslims. We’d been in hospital overnight and needed something quick to eat.
“My husband took a bite as soon as we’d left and spat it out straight away. I hadn’t had any of mine yet but there was only bacon in his.”
“It was extremely upsetting for us both. It’s a religious choice, so it’s not something that we just do for fun.
“As Muslims, it’s completely forbidden. We can’t just pick and choose to have it. My husband was physically gagging.
“And – this is quite personal – I said to him that I didn’t even feel like kissing him or holding his hand because I know you’ve had pork.
“It was really distressing as neither of us have ever eaten pork in our lives.”
The couple have been liaising with McDonald’s customer service regarding the incident.
A spokesperson from McDonald’s commented: “Order accuracy is of the utmost importance to us and we have strict procedures in place to ensure that customers are served correctly. We are disappointed to hear that we’ve fallen short of these high standards and would like to sincerely apologise to the customer affected.
“As soon as we were made aware of this incident, we instigated a thorough investigation, and our restaurant team has been reminded of our robust food handling processes. We understand that the customer is in touch with our customer services team to help find a resolution.”
Moreover, the incident has been flagged with Stoke-on-Trent City Council and the Food Standards Agency.
